Power of the Word

The Word of God is God

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:2  He was with God in the beginning.
John 1:3  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

In first John in the New Testament we get to understand the meaning of the Word of God. The word of God is equal to God Himself and it is also the power under which all things came into existence.

A common question will be, Was a car made by God? Yes, will be the answer, for no car is made from any material that does not exist nor is it made by a creature that God didn't make. Man was made by God and so are the materials he uses;  by this virtue alone everything was made by God. The world we live in and everything in the universe is an extension of God or to put it in another way, everything that we are, everything that surrounds us sums up to what God is.

The Word is Alive

As God is, so is the Word. The word of God is alive.
Heb 4:12  For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.

Therefore, even today it still works and is still powerful.

True Wisdom

In first Corinthians Chapter one verse nineteen we also get to understand that the word of God is the ultimate unchallengeable wisdom which is above all wisdoms and Christ's message is God’s power at work.

1Co 1:18  For the message (word) of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Any other form of wisdom will be challenged and will be found wanting.

19  “I will destroy the wisdom of all who claim to be wise. I will confuse those who think they know so much.”

Christ is the Word

Christ by scripture is identified as the Word and is also identified as God and He performed as God by manifesting the ability to create, the ability to give life, the ability to discern evil, the ability to provide for daily needs, the ability to heal and the ability even to forgive sins.

He  made wine from water, multiplied a boy's lunch and fed a multitude, healed the sick, made the blind see, made the dumb able to hear and talk, straightened crippled limbs, raised the dead, cast out demons, walked on water, raised himself from the dead and defied gravity by rising up into the heavens.

By identifying himself through the word he was able to accomplish all that he had been assigned to do from the beginning of time and even though that revelation prescribed suffering he bore it for he saw it as inconsequential in relation to the Glory he would assume in the heaven-lies.

The Disciples

Spending time with the word brings about changes. The disciples of Jesus had a rare opportunity of walking daily with the manifestation of the Word who is Christ. Their daily contact with Him shaped them to be more and more like Him and later we see Peter being able to heal as Jesus healed.

Saul who was later known as Paul also had such contact with the risen Christ and was transformed and he became the greatest missionary and writer in the new Testament. The power of God in him was such that his shadow and kerchiefs were able to heal.

Mankind and the Word

God's word from Genesis to Revelation shows the relationship between man and God. It tells us

  1. Where man came from - Old Testament
  2. His identity and duties as prescribed by God - Old Testament
  3. His defiance / fall - Old Testament
  4. His suffering - Old Testament
  5. His salvation / Christ (Word)(God) - New Testament
  6. His restoration (true identity) - New Testament

Salvation

When we get saved we agree with this Word and we also accept Christ Jesus as our salvation. In reality we embrace the power of God at work which is Christ. We start growing in Christ and in our consistency we start manifesting like Christ.

A car expresses the power of man by being able to move and to transport both man (the maker) and other goods. If the car was made and was unable to move then all the work of man would have been in futility.

In the same manner Christ by performing above the known capabilities of man was able to show the power of God through miracles, signs and wonders. If no man ever did such things then the power of God would have been questioned.
If our salvation does not show us different from the people of the world, then the people of the world question the power of that Word and thus the power of our God.

Identity

After accepting Christ, we start to learn about who we  truly are. The word reveals our true identity.

Jeremiah 15: 16
Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts.

Most of us are called by our family names. When you read the word you realize that you are called by the name of the Lord. That means you are His child.

Authority

When we know our true identity we start to operate in authority. The power of the Word is revealed by its ability to transform what is ordinary to what extraordinary. That power transforms this ordinary people to people of excellence and who do exploits.

Dan 11:32  And such as violate the covenant he shall pervert and seduce with flatteries, but the people who know their God shall prove themselves strong and shall stand firm and do exploits [for God].

Everyone who has accepted Jesus Christ has this potential within them and we must be careful also to see that potential regardless of the appearance of such persons.

2Cor 5:15  And Christ did die for all of us. He died so we would no longer live for ourselves, but for the one who died and was raised to life for us.
2Cor 5:16  We are careful not to judge people by what they seem to be, though we once judged Christ in that way.
2Cor 5:17  Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.

Have time for the Word

We have to find time for the study of the Word of God and also by motivate others to do the same. This will ensure that we grow and become more like Christ

If we want to be different from the world then we have to hold on to the power of the Word of God by continuously meditating on it and querying it to find out the way we should walk. Our expected future is pegged on our resolve to walk with Christ and walking with Christ is walking with the Word.

Christ says he is the way the truth and the life. If we follow Christ's way of doing things then we are sure that we are on the right path, we'll operate in truth, nothing will be too hard for us.
