#MyDressMyChoice is what has been trending for the past week following the undressing of a woman who was allegedly scantily dressed.
Dressing is and has been a controversial issue from time immemorial and from the onset when our colonizers came into this country and found our ancestors walking bare chested, they labelled them indecent and introduced their own attire which we religiously adopted.
As Christians we agree that there is what is termed as indecent exposure and we do insist that practising Christians carry themselves in such a manner to reflect that they have an understanding of what their bodies represent, which is the temple of the Lord. Paul in his instructions asks women to dress modestly.
1 Timothy 2:9 NIV
I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,
Most of our beloved women who are practising Christians will sometimes go overboard and dress indecently with over exposure and this is due to various factors. Mostly it is because no one has taught them why we insist on modesty when it comes to dressing. Lack of knowledge does not call for tongue lashing but rather men who term themselves as spiritually mature know that correction instilled with love and true teaching goes along way in creating a people that fear God and better still that understand His teachings.
The undressing of that particular woman was unfortunate but more unfortunate is the Christian who endorses such an act. The act itself is no different from the stoning that Jesus stopped. Two wrongs will never make a right and that for sure was a wrong.
Christians also tend to forget that we are in the world but not of the world. Understanding where we are is also understanding what to expect. Most Christians still expect the world to come up with an acceptable 'morality' forgetting that without God, man continues to deteriorate. The epitome of the ungodly is evident with the rise of strip clubs and the trend of casual relationships that do not view sexual contact as reserved for those in matrimony.
What then guides the man who doesn't have the heart of God ? The guide to such men is the law. There are laws that will take care of indecent exposure but those who have Christ are led by the spirit of God and the knowledge of His principles. The spirit of God convicts them when they are about to enter into sin and so they saved.
All said, a Christian person needs to understand that not all fashion trends are for us and that does not mean that we cover ourselves up from head to toe but let's appear different from those who are of the world by acknowledging that how we dress does not only affect us, but it also affects those around us of whom some are weak.
